Shall We Truly Hear the Psalms?
In one way or another in his many works, Walter Brueggemann has asked his readers, “Shall we truly hear the Psalms?” I hear in his question a challenge to learn to hear the psalms as they were heard by the first hearers, hearers who were or were living the memories of the threats of exodus, exile and empire. I hear a call to be vulnerable to the history of the texts that we might be immersed in the praise, pain, trauma and urgency resident in these texts. I hear, too, a charg

Prayers in Praise of Every Age: Aging
While waiting to hear from an ophthalmologist about a cataract. (08.11.23) O LORD, Thank you for reminders of age that let me know life has beginnings and endings I cannot control. Thank you for the frustration of fatigue that says I need to let others share in the vocation of well-doing. Thank you for those occasional glitches in memory that push me to trust you as the One for whom I live “in remembrance of.” Thank you for aches and bruises that take just that little bit lo

175 Anniversary Celebratory Shirts
One of the hallmarks of Freemason Street Baptist Church is our commitment to service. As we look to celebrate our 175th Anniversary, what a better way to do so than raising money to support the Clothing Closet? The Clothing Closet currently serves anywhere from 30-50 people each Friday, operating entirely on clothing donations from the community. Any funds raised will go towards the purchase of items for the clothing closet such as socks, denim and other heavily requested ite

The Power of Teachers Is a Calling to Shape Lives
As another school year draws nearer to a close, I’m thinking of teachers and thanking God for them, especially now. My mom and Angie’s, too, were schoolteachers, and I come from a generationally long line of teachers, including the current generation of aunts, uncles, nephews, and cousins. I am grateful for them all, and especially for the gift of being married to one of the finest teachers I have ever seen, too. (I haven’t forgotten that I work for a Teacher – THE Teacher, R

The Day After the Resurrection (again)
(a reposting, heartfelt and still true) It had been one of those nights when it felt as if, with enough of a shove, the entire world might split at the seams, coming apart, with no one nearby who was big enough to pick up the pieces. The day before had been Good Friday, the day the events of an unholy week, full of fury, anger, pathos, competing agendas — and dare we say, love? — had culminated in the murder of God. It was the day ambiguity about Jesus had melted away to re
